The Emotional Aspect of Guide School

If you wish to guide others, you must understand and master human emotions. Everything in life is associated with emotion. If you are talking about money, eventually everyone reverts to emotional accounting. As in, “I should be getting paid more than other people!” or “They are not worth what they are getting paid for.” Humans are always comparing our situation to that of others. It’s not whether we have a paycheck or not. Or whether the paycheck will be enough to cover our bills, but it will be about whether our check is higher or lower than what other people are getting.

Your success in an organization or with a group of people will all depend on how they feel about you emotionally. Do you make them angry, do they become happy in your presence, do you feel like they are taking advantage of you, or do you feel like you are taking advantage of them?

Gossip is an integral part of our emotional state. In gossip, we are talking about other people, what they are doing, and what they should be doing. And when we gossip, we are discussing people who are not there. When you have three people, two go to the other side of the room and whisper about the third person. The third person may only catch one or two words, but they will watch the facial expressions and gestures, and be able to understand if the conversation is about them and if it is positive or negative.

When we are guiding our clients like to hear gossip about the area, or the people that live there. This will be tidbits about information that is not normally known. When you gossip with them, they feel like you are in their privileged circle and now you are their good friends. Gossip can be uplifting or destructive. Famous people become wealthy because others gossip about them. This happens when we gossip about what a great actor someone is, or their latest affair, and both actions will give them a better paycheck.

When we are guiding clients, we need to connect to them emotionally. Then we direct that attention to the area in which we are guiding. Our websites, promotional material, all should direct and create the emotions that we wish other people to have. When you throw someone off a hundred-foot cliff, this can be quite emotional. When you take someone on a 20 mile hike, they tend to become emotional over the last 10 miles, whining and complaining that they can’t go any further. Of course, when they get home, they will brag that they hiked 50 miles with a 200 lb backpack, and how they endured the pain and deprivation.

In order to take care of your clients and get repeat clients, you will need to create emotional events and make sure that these emotions are the ones that people need to take home with them.

Our emotions create memories. The clients then bring these memories home with them and talk about their adventures with others. To help understand emotions better, we will deal with the Science of Humor and the Science of Laughter. Humor is a feeling or force flowing through our body like a fluid. One can have good humors and bad humors. Laughter and crying are how we express these feelings and emotions flowing through our bodies so that others can understand how we feel.
